Planning and Scheduling.
Did you know that children are comforted by knowing what to expect in their schedule? Family life is busy and sometimes as parents we forget to tell our little ones about changes from the norm. Giving your child clues about what is happening next and what to expect will help them develop strong predicting skills.
The capability to predict is a pre-math skill and it is something that can be strengthen through something as simple as pointing out patterns. For example have you ever had trouble with your child not getting ready when you say it is time to go? Think back to the routine and pattern that happens when you say this….when you say “it is time to go,” and then stick around to chat you are demonstrating that it is not really time to go. If this action happens more than once without any explanation your child may stop listening to you. He or she has learned through observation that “time to go” does not mean right now. So what can you do?
Follow up this action statement “it’s time to go,” with the corresponding actions of putting on shoes and coat, saying good-bye and heading toward the exit. If for some reason there is a delay, take the time to explain that it is out of the ordinary and what. Make sure to add that you will be leaving as soon as the delay ends. When it ends, take action and go.
These simple tips will go a long way when it comes to behavior as well as long-term life skills such as math and becoming organized. For more online resources click on the “Radio Tips” tab to access pre-screened links about building math & predicting skills.
I hope this helps you on your parenting journey!
